Customer Review: Drive is great - vendor not so much

I'm familiar with this line of drive from previous purchases, so I have no concerns about the Hitachi product itself - even though I was unfortunate to receive a unit that was DOA. That happens with technology, and I've always been able to resolve such issue quickly in the past.
However, that does lead me to comment on a less than favorable response thus far from JR, the vendor who sold the unit through Amazon. The drive was "dead on arrival" and shipped in packaging that was not very protective. When I contacted JR about the defective drive I found that I had to ship it back to them at _my_ _expense_, wait while they evaluated the unit in-house, after which they would send a replacement unit. Several things about this process have left me less inclined to purchase from JR in the future - their prices and products are fine, but I'm concerned about what happens when there is a problem.
1. I was impressed with the speed with which the RMA number for return was supplied.
2. I'm not impressed by the requirement that I pay for return shipping of a defective unit.
3. I'm not impressed that JR lets me wait without the drive I need while it gets shipped to them. In the past I have dealt with vendors who immediately ship the replacement.
4. I'm not impressed that JR did not reply to a message I left about this on their web site.
5. I'm not impressed that more than a week after I shipped the drive to them via 2-day shipping that I have heard nothing and still have no drive.
To summarize: I have always had fine experiences with Hitachi drives of this type. I have purchased from JR in the past and had not issues. This experience suggests to me, however, that JR is not capable of appropriately handling issues with damaged products. As a result I am far less likely to make future purchases from them.
